Is it normal to lose weight during the first trimester of pregnancy?
There are a ton of questions about this online. Women around their 10th week of pregnancy or so realize that they’ve actually lost weight – usually 5 to 10 pounds – and begin to grow concerned.
It would seem that a person’s weight would increase with pregnancy – and for good reason. This is why some people are struck with a sense of surprise when they step on the scale and realize that they’ve actually gotten lighter.
But is this normal? Is it safe? And why does it happen?
Yes, you can breathe a sigh of relief. The truth is that a lot of pregnant women experience this – and it’s really nothing to be concerned about. It won’t impact the baby’s development, and it isn’t a sign that things aren’t ‘going right’ with the pregnancy.
Why does it happen?
Most of the time, the culprit here is morning sickness. As many as 80 percent of pregnant women experience some degree of morning sickness during the first trimester – and this can have a definite impact on your body weight in the beginning of the pregnancy.
With that being said, morning sickness tends to go away after week 14 or so – which should allow your appetite to come back without a problem. Once it does, you can probably expect to gain back most of the weight you lost – and you might even pick up a few extra pounds! But don’t worry if you do, because it’s actually healthy to gain up to 4 pounds overall during the first trimester.
Should you worry if you lose a LOT of weight?
If you start losing a lot of weight (10% of your body weight or more), then you might want to speak with your doctor about it. If, for example, you usually weigh 120 pounds, but find yourself losing as much as 12 pounds before the first trimester is over, then you might want to get it checked out. Your doctor may prescribe you something to help you manage the morning sickness so that you don’t lose any more.
Should you try to lose weight during your pregnancy?
This is a question that’s best answered by your doctor, as the answer isn’t always so clearly defined. As a general rule, a lot of women gain weight during pregnancy.
But with that being said, some women who start out overweight actually manage to drop a lot of weight over the course of the pregnancy instead, which is actually a good thing because it brings them back into a healthier body-weight range.
But it’s also very important that you don’t stress your body too much either. Getting enough exercise, eating plenty of the right types of foods, and eating controlled, yet healthy portions is often all that is required to help your body along during this time. If healthy habits during pregnancy lead to some healthy weight-loss, then you should probably congratulate yourself – but losing weight shouldn’t be something that comes before your health and safety either, especially if you’re already close to a healthy body weight.
