Fish Oil and a Fatty Diet

Published On September 2, 2016 | By Albert Just | Weight Loss

For most people, avoiding fatty foods might seem like a cornerstone to weight loss. But did you know that there are actually some fats that you need to stay healthy and achieve your fitness goals? As it turns out, Omega 3 fatty acids are an essential part of the human diet. Omega 3s provide essential nutrients that that body cannot produce on its own, and getting enough is essential to a long, healthy, and happy life.

What’s the deal with fish oil?

Fish oil supplements are full of Omega-3 fatty acids. But, as it turns out, this might help your weight loss goals more than you realize.

According to an article by Livestrong.com, fish oil supplements may help to prevent the accumulation of body fat. They also help you to avoid putting on more unwanted belly fat. But they might not work the way a lot of people think they will. Fish oil isn’t necessarily a ‘fat burner’, in the classic sense of the word. What these supplements are designed to do is provide essential, vital nutrients that the body needs to thrive and survive.

Information! According to a study that was published in 2009, mice who were fed a high-fat diet did better when they also received Omega 3 fatty acid supplements. The mice that received the Omega 3 supplementation had less body fat and better cholesterol levels than the mice that didn’t – despite the fact that they were fed the same high-fat diet.

This study was backed up by a PLOS One report that was released back in 2015. This report, which looked at twenty one different studies done on fish oil and Omega 3s, showed that fish oil supplementation will not technically help you to ‘lose’ weight – but it does help to prevent the gaining of new weight.

In general, higher levels of Omega 3s in the body was closely correlated with normal body weight – whereas a deficiency of Omega 3s is pretty consistently correlated with people who are obese.

So will fish oil help with your weight-loss goals?

When it comes to fish oil, you need to think about your overall health, fitness, and well-being to see the benefits. Fish oil isn’t going to work like a fad diet pill. It’s not a magic bullet to melt away body fat. But it can contribute positively to your body and health in a number of ways – and in doing so, it can help you to achieve better overall physical health (including a better BMI number).

There are actually 3 different Omega 3 fatty acids. These are called ALA, DHA, and EPA. All of them are good for us, but the preferred Omega 3s for human health are DHA and EPA. ALA is also good for you, but fish oil actually contains higher levels of DHA and EPA – which makes it one of the best sources of Omega 3 fatty acids available.

Information! You can achieve similar results by eating plenty of salmon and sardines – while ALA Omega 3s are more common in nuts, seeds, and grass-fed beef. Your body can turn ALA into usable EPA and DHA – but it’s more efficient to absorb these Omega 3s in their pure state, which is what happens when you take fish oil.

As a general rule, you’ll want to make sure that you get at least 1,000 milligrams of EPA/DHA per day, as part of a combined total of 4,000 milligrams of Omega 3s altogether.

Should you take fish oil supplements if you want to lose weight?

Taking fish oil on a daily basis is very, very good – especially if you want to lose weight. Granted, fish oil isn’t going to melt the fat away like a miracle cure. The only way to do that is to work hard, cut calories, and make sure that you’re creating a calorie deficit between your exercise level and the amount of food that you’re eating.

But fish oil can help you in a number of ways that can contribute to this. It’s good for your joints, heart, and brain. It will contribute a great deal toward overall health and wellness, will help you with beneficial hormone levels, and will help to keep you from gaining more weight from here on out.

Granted, fish oil isn’t a miracle cure – but it has more science to back it up than most dietary supplements, and will no-doubt help you on your journey to becoming the healthiest, sexiest version of yourself possible. If you want to feel better, both mentally and physically, then eating a healthier, cleaner diet, working out more, and taking a fish oil supplement on a daily basis are all habits that will begin to seriously boost your weight-loss goals.
