Losing weight is a pretty textbook process under most normal circumstances. You need to create some kind of a calorie deficit – and over time, your body weight will decease as extra fat is used up to compensate for the deficit.

But this can be accomplished in a number of different ways – and you might be surprised at how many extra calories you can burn by getting a little bit creative.

Not all of these tips are going to work for everyone – but you might be surprised at how many extra calories you can actually burn by doing things just a little bit differently throughout the day.

Plus, these tips will barely take any extra effort!


Stand instead of sitting

Did you know that your heart beats faster while you’re standing than it does while you’re sitting? It does… about 10 beats per minute more. But at the end of the day, this adds up to some serious calorie-burning. As it turns out, standing instead of sitting will burn about 50 more calories per hour.

If you substitute standing for sitting for just 2 hours per day, that’s enough over the course of the year to burn off about 8 pounds of fat!

So next time you decide to watch TV, try standing instead of sitting. Your waistline will eventually thank you!


You burn more calories walking on dirt than on pavement

This one is a bit on the bizarre side – but you tend to burn about 7 percent more in calories when you walk on hard dirt as opposed to walking on the sidewalk.

If you do a lot of walking every day, walking alongside the sidewalk, in the dirt, might add up to some serious weight loss – 7 percent more, to be exact! If you burn 1,000 calories per week walking to work on the pavement, you can actually burn 1,070 walking alongside it, for what will seem like zero extra effort.


You burn more calories when you’re cold than when you’re hot

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that shivering burns calories… but it might be even more effective than a lot of people realize.

Obviously, getting so cold that you shiver can potentially put you at risk for hypothermia – which is certainly not a good thing. But as a side-note, shivering does use up quite a few extra calories, as your body is working extra-hard to keep your core temperature warm enough – and is basically using your body-fat to fuel the process.

But even more than that, shivering also raises irisin levels in the body. Irison is a hormone that prompts certain fat cells to use energy to produce heat – which basically leads to extra calories being burned to fuel the warming-up process.

You might not want to set yourself up for shivering intentionally, as it can be dangerous to get that cold – but next time that you just happen to be shivering, you can at least take solace in the fact that you’re burning more calories as a result!


Fidget for weight loss

Did you know that people who ‘fidget’ when they are at rest tend to burn quite a few more calories than people who remain stationary?

It’s true. You can actually burn up to 350 calories per day fidgeting! This requires barely any effort at all, and many people do it as a mindless activity when their brain is busy, but their hands are bored.

Looking to lose some weight? Try fidgeting next time you’re sitting at your desk. It just might work wonders over time!

Ok, this is a bit of a stretch – but texting constantly can burn 40 calories per hour.

Obviously, you could be doing better things with your time, like running, doing push-ups, or even dancing. But if you happen to do a lot of texting, then you can (once again) take comfort in the fact that the activity does have some calorie-burning value!
